嗜睡症/昏睡病講述的是：
艾波和薇拉·瓦爾登在一起生活了二十年，雖然他們居住在不同的非洲國家裏，但他們的生活還是很不錯。艾波是一家昏睡病研究機構的負責人，他的工作很忙，但他卻很喜歡這份工作。可是薇拉卻愈發地覺得自己在喀麥隆的首都雅溫德的生活不令人滿意，尤其是那些流亡國外的人員的聚會和小圈子，令她很不爽。
Ebbo and Vera Velten have spent the better part of the past twenty years living in different African countries. Ebbo is the manager of a sleeping sickness programme. His work is fulfilling. Vera, however, feels increasingly lost in Yaounde’s ex-pat community. She can’t bear the separation from her 14-year-old daughter, Helen, who is attending boarding school in Germany.
